“Top Gun: Maverick 2022” will screen at the festival, likely out of competition. While the screening is unlikely to mark the film’s world premiere, it represents a major win for Cannes, adding some serious star power to the festival’s 75th edition. This will be the first time in three decades that a Tom Cruise film has been screened at Cannes. His last appearance on the festival bill was Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992.

Top Gun was a sensation. The highest-grossing film of the year, it sold 47 million theater tickets in the United States alone, enough to keep showing on over a thousand screens nationwide for five months straight, and broke home media records. The film instantly became iconic, both for its aerial sequences and for parts that Pauline Kael called “a brilliant homoerotic commercial.” If you ever want to see the precise moment Tom Cruise became Tom Cruise, watch Top Gun. But that was 36 years ago, and a lot has changed since then. Tony Scott, the film’s director, died a decade ago. Tom Cruise became a megastar, lost everything in a fit of bullshit, and then came back on top. Top Gun as an entity has also slumped in relevance; surpassed by decades of bigger, flashier movies.

And yet here we are. In just a few weeks, Top Gun: Maverick will finally hit our screens. A lot of time has passed; first derailed by Scott’s death. But now his release seems set in stone, so there’s only one question left. Does anyone really care?

You have to be honest, it doesn’t look exactly this way. A Top Gun sequel seems destined to struggle to find a place in a release schedule packed with superhero movies and other ongoing franchises. The original isn’t remembered well enough to make an impression on kids, and the people who loved it can’t see any justification for a new one. It would be a gamble at any time, but, post-Covid, when not even Steven Spielberg remaking a beloved musical can make the seats feel bad, it seems awfully risky.

My theory is that if Top Gun: Maverick is a flop, it’s because it doesn’t realize the true strength of Tom Cruise. At this point in his life, Tom Cruise transcends the plot. No matter what movie you put him in, he’s Tom Cruise. This is why, a few years ago, someone on Wikipedia changed the name of most of the characters he had played to “Jack” and it took a while for people to notice. And if Tom Cruise can transcend the plot, he definitely transcends this kind of unnecessary fan service. People aren’t going to watch Top Gun: Maverick to see how it ties into the larger Top Gun universe. They’re going to see it because it’s a Tom Cruise movie.

At this point I have to jump off the fence for a moment. I’m going to watch Top Gun: Maverick. This is, in part, because it delivers exactly what I want from a Tom Cruise movie in 2022, which is Tom Cruise thrown around like a rag doll.

This, after all, is the real reason someone invests in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The plots of those movies are silly and labyrinthine, but they’re redeemed by Cruise’s total, planet-destroying dedication to pushing himself to the limits of human endurance. Tom Cruise sees a building, Tom Cruise wants to climb up the side. Tom Cruise sees a helicopter, Tom Cruise pilots the damn helicopter himself. Tom Cruise sees a plane, Tom Cruise hangs off the side of it with his fingertips.

And it looks like this spirit of reckless adventure will continue in Top Gun: Maverick. The most compelling scenes shown in any of the trailers so far are the ones where Cruise is pummeled into a succession of ultra-fast fighter jets. In fact, I’d say that the few people who are excited about Top Gun: Maverick 2022 don’t really want there to be a plot at all. They’d just be content with two hours of Go-Pro footage of Tom Cruise squashed against the back of his seat, his face shattered beyond all G-force recognition. Tom, if you’re reading, there’s still time to edit everything. let it not be this.
