The Invitation is an American horror thriller film directed by Jessica M. Thompson and produced by Michael P. Flannigan, Emile Gladstone and Jessica M. Thompson. It stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty, Sean Pertwee, Hugh Skinner, and Stephanie Corneliussen.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula mythos is about to get a chilling modern twist. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for The Invitation, an upcoming gothic horror thriller that’s loosely inspired by Stoker’s original work. The film, which was initially called The Bride, stars Game of Thrones and Fast & Furious alumna Nathalie Emmanuel as Evie, an adult orphan who takes a DNA test and learns she has an extended family. In Great Britain. But soon after meeting her newly discovered and extravagantly wealthy relatives, Evie learns her shocking and bloody history, and the family’s sinister intentions for her.

“[Evie] doesn’t really feel like she has anyone,” Emmanuel explained in an interview with IGN. “So when this kind of random, long-lost cousin shows up in her life after taking a DNA test for fun, just to goof around or just for fun, it really draws her in because he’s someone she’s really longing for. Family and a support network again. She is drawn to this family with very high expectations, in a way. And yes, as you say, be careful what you wish for because they are not exactly what she thought they were and would be.

According to Emmanuel, the film deals with “being in a space where you are a minority, all these people are very rich white aristocracy. And Evie is someone who struggles financially, she’s not from a super rich family, she’s a woman of color, she comes from a very different space. And so she’s already on alert, on high alert, because she’s already kind of at a disadvantage in every possible way. But what they probably didn’t count on was how smart and cunning she was and how strong she was inside of her.

The cast of The Invitation also includes Thomas Doherty as Walter, Hugh Skinner as Oliver, Stephanie Corneliussen as Viktoria, Alana Boden as Lucy, and Courtney Taylor as Grace. Jessica M. Thompson directs the film from a screenplay by Blair Butler. Previous reports have showed that if the film is successful, it could start a franchise.

“Thompson is a really smart director, confident, knows what she wants, and brilliant.” Emmanuel said in another part of the interview. Jess worked a lot with me to help build that ease, that chemistry that they have right away, and that ultimately lures her into a false sense of security.
