The The Adam Project 2022 Ryan Reynolds movie is reportedly arriving on Netflix in March 2022. Science fiction author David Brin says there’s only one reason for time travel: “Make it not happen.” The idea of correcting, no, preventing an error is an irresistible fantasy. And whether it’s protecting the mother-to-be from the only hero who can lead a rebellion against Skynet or making sure your own parents fall in love so you and your siblings are born, the movies have given us some of our favorite stories. rescue. operations traveling in time. “The Adam Project” is a popcorn treat from the director and star of last year.

It starts with a banger, in fact one of the most banger songs of all time, Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin'” from 1966. It’s not there to tell us where we are in time or anything about rocket pilot Adam Reed. (Ryan Reynolds). No matter, he’s just there to bring a jolt of energy as we join the story in the midst of the chase. We know Reynolds can play other characters, but here’s what he does best and most, a sarcastic action hero. “What are you doing, captain?” Catherine Keener’s instantly recognizable voice asks over the speakerphone. “I think it’s pretty obvious that I’m stealing this plane.” We’re told it’s 2050 and time travel exists, but we don’t know yet. And we can see that Adam is in trouble. Both he and the boat have been hit. “Sorry to interrupt what I’m sure will be a truly terrifying threat,” he says as he locks out his tracking system and evades capture by escaping through a wormhole that takes him back to 2022.

Meanwhile, in the present, 12-year-old Adam Reed (Walker Scobell) is being suspended for the third time for fighting a bully. He and his mother are still mourning Adam’s father, who died in a car accident over a year ago, and he’s angry about it, about being small for his age, about just about everything, etc. he’s really big on sarcastic responses, even when he knows it means a beating.

Big Adam arrives at Young Adam’s house (his old house of his), injured, with a damaged boat. Reynolds and Scobell make a great match, with the same rhythms, both in the observation and in the snark. They also have the same scar under their chin and the same watch, their dad’s watch. It doesn’t take long for young Adam to realize that he is talking to his future self. It takes a little longer for Big Adam to realize that his younger self deserves some pity. As he tells Young Adam that it’s all the trauma he experiences that will give him the strength and cynicism he relies on as an adult, he learns that maybe a little less trauma is good for both of them.

The bad guys aren’t long in coming either, along with two key figures I won’t spoil. “The Adam Project” deftly balances the action with the comedy inherent in the conflict between the two Adams. Both versions of Adam are exceptionally good at making everyone around them nervous, and it’s fun to watch them both irritate and appreciate each other’s clever responses. Big Adam doesn’t want to be reminded of how unhappy and angry he was when he was 12 years old. Young Adam is as excited by the prospect of growing up to look like Ryan Reynolds as he is by learning that there is such a thing as time travel and traveling in an actual spaceship. He doesn’t understand how unhappy and angry his future self is, but we do.
