Star Trek fans have had a lot to celebrate in recent years. Along with the introduction of Star Trek: Discovery, a new series that introduces audiences to new characters and new worlds, the Star Trek universe has expanded further with two animated series and the return of an old favorite character in a new series. Paramount is about to launch another series called Strange New Worlds. Strange New Worlds follows the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike, Kirk’s predecessor, and his adventures aboard the U.S.S. Business. Here’s what we know so far about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

What is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds about?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes place in the pre-James T. Kirk era, when Captain Christopher Pike manned the helm of the U.S.S. Business. With his Number One and Vulcan Science Officer Spock at his side, Pike and the Enterprise will explore new worlds around the galaxy. All three characters previously appeared in season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

Captain Pike is Captain James T. Kirk’s immediate predecessor on the Enterprise. The character has been portrayed by four actors so far. Jeffrey Hunter originated the role in the pilot episode, but after the pilot was rejected, he dropped out of the series and the show was reimagined with Kirk in the lead. Within the original series, Sean Kenney plays an older Pike with the show using footage from the unaired pilot as stock footage of the character. In the recent Star Trek movie by J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin, Bruce Greenwood plays Pike and mentors a young James Kirk.

Mount is probably best known for his role as Cullen Bohannon on AMC’s Hell on Wheels. He also starred in the short-lived Marvel series In humans and has appeared in Dollhouse, Law & Order, Lost and Smallville. When asked about being cast as Captain Pike, Mount said, “I never thought he would end up captaining the Enterprise. Every day that I am on set, I am not exaggerating, I feel disbelief and a feeling of tremendous gratitude.”

Star Trek: Discovery was recently renewed for a fifth season. New episodes of the fourth season resume on February 10. The current season finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery faces a threat unlike any it has ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must face the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all.

Star Trek: Picard follows former Starfleet Admiral Jean-Luc Picard on his retirement. After leaving Starfleet in protest, Picard is trying to live the quiet life of a winemaker in his chateau in France. When a strange young woman shows up at her vineyard asking for her help, Picard feels compelled to help her. When he sees his extraordinary abilities, he is reminded of his old friend Data, a synthetic being who had always longed for a daughter. Seeking answers to her own questions, Picard turns to space travel as he races to save the young woman’s identical twin sister from Romulan assassins intent on killing her and all of her kind.
