Extraction 2 2022, Netflix’s most popular movie to date, is getting a sequel, with Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Tyler Rake. Filming has officially wrapped and is currently in post-production. It should come as no surprise that a sequel is being planned for the Netflix original, as more than 99 million households watched the film online. It outperformed Bird Box, Murder Mystery and 6 Underground.
Extraction is an exceptionally exciting ride, even in the vast scope of Netflix success stories. The Russo brothers’ action thriller came at an opportune time, as the 2020 global lockdown left people looking for something to watch.
It was immediately the most popular Netflix movie release of all time, beating the online platform’s year-end record. As a result, it seemed unlikely that Netflix would miss out on making a sequel. While the film’s critical response was mixed, as you’d expect for a relatively straightforward shooter, the fact remains that Extraction’s ultra-stylish action scenes left people wanting more.
Viewers were quick to realize that the film’s ending paved the way for a sequel. Tyler was supposed to die in the initial version of the script, but this was changed to make the conclusion more ambiguous after test screenings. With a protagonist who works as a gun-for-hire, the sequel could go in any direction and take place anywhere.
The action-packed extraction is every bit as exciting as you’d expect from a movie starring Chris Hemsworth and produced by the Russo brothers. Audiences have taken notice, too, and as Deadline tells us, the film appears to be on its way to becoming the most-watched Netflix original movie ever. It had the biggest opening day for a movie in the streaming service’s history, and current estimates project that 90 million households will see Extraction in its first four weeks.
With that in mind, the question on everyone’s lips is whether we’ll ever get a sequel. Fortunately, writer Joe Russo has confirmed that the answer is yes. “The deal is done for me to write Extraction 2, and we’re in the formative stages of what the story can be,” he says.
