“Elvis 2022” Baz Luhrmann’s drama about the rock and roll legend starring Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) and Tom Hanks, will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Variety confirmed.

The film currently has a release date of June 24, which means it would not be able to open the festival unless Warner Bros. In addition to Butler, who plays the King, and Hanks, who plays Colonel Tom Parker, Presley’s manager who controls everything, the cast also features Olivia DeJonge and Natasha Bassett. The trailer was released last month and garnered positive feedback.

Luhrmann’s first film since “The Great Gatsby,” “Elvis” explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager. The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning more than 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and America’s loss of innocence. At the center of that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (DeJonge). Luhrmann wrote the script with Craig Pearce.

Variety had predicted that the film would be screened at Cannes, along with “Top Gun” and George Miller’s new film “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future,” Hirokazu Kore’s “Broker.” eda and Park Chan- wook’s “Decision to Leave”, among others.

The Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival will be announced at a press conference in Paris during the second or third week of April. The festival will run from May 17-28 with new sponsors including TikTok and Brut, as well as French public broadcaster France Televisions.
